Get phones out. Keep the tools that help kids catch up.
Tell the LAUSD Board to separate smartphones from the learning tools teachers actually use.
The LAUSD Board is right to want phones and social media out of the school day. Most parents feel the same way. But the restrictions now under consideration go further than that, and they risk pulling teacher-directed learning tools into the same ban.
Those tools are not TikTok. They give no open access to the internet, and they do not replace the teacher. They show teachers exactly where a child is struggling in reading or math, then give a structured way to help that child one at a time, inside a classroom of 25 students. For a lot of kids who have fallen behind, this is how they are catching up.
If the Board writes one rule for everything, the phones go and so do the tools. Parents deserve a policy that knows the difference between a distraction and a lifeline.
